Description
Chinese jumu kneehole desk dating to the late Qing dynasty (c.1900).
A very striking desk that has been fashioned from Jumu, otherwise known as southern elm, which was a popular material for furniture making in the Suzhou region of China.
The desk is fitted with an arrangement of thirteen drawers around a kneehole with foot rest bars. In addition, each side is complete with a removable panel enclosing six further drawers. Jumu has a wonderful colour, and is a very tactile wood, making this a very useable piece of furniture.
This has been a well-loved piece and carries the signs of use and age that one would expect on the surface of the desk, which adds to the character and the honesty of the piece (see photos).
Such an interesting and stylish piece of furniture that will no doubt grace any office or perhaps as a piece of more occasional furniture withink the home. The 'hidden' drawers add an element of uniqueness to the piece and we think is also rather fun!

condition
This is a solid piece of furniture that is structurally sound and ready to use. The surface shows signs of wear from age and use but for us this adds to the character of the piece. Please look carefully through all photos to satisfy yourself as to these. Feel free to ask for more information and photographs should you wish.
