Description
This is a fine silver aneroid pocket barometer altimeter to 15000ft with movement by Elliott Brothers c1893.
Silver pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered and engraved dial with dual concentric scales, the outer altitude scale calibrated in feet from 0 – 15,000ft and divided to 100ft, the inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 18–31”, divided to 1/10ths. The upper part with standard meteorological terms and “Compensated.” Rotating bezel with index, blued steel pointer, bevelled glass. Conventional first quality 1” capsule driven movement tensioned on a C spring. All contained within a barrel form case with engine turned finishers. The verso with calibration port, and full hallmarks for sterling silver, London, 1893, and the silversmith “J.S & S.” Extension post and suspension ring, hallmarked.
Condition: The subject of a full mechanical overhaul and calibration under laboratory conditions. Very crisp, the dial clean and unmarked, the case with light hazing to an area of verso, the glass with two faint marks, only visible at certain angles. The movement working well with good sensitivity and progression, accuracy well within acceptable limits, see performance chart.
Comments: This is a very good instrument - the quality is first class, the movement from Elliott Brothers, and the case evidently by a silversmith of status, though at this time the identity of “J.S & S” is unknown - the usual resources carry this hallmark, but do not specify the silversmith.
Fine and working well, this silver pocket barometer would be a perfect gift or sit well in a collection.
