Description
Beatrix Potter: The story of A Fierce Bad Rabbit.
Published by Frederick Warne & Co London and New York 1906
This is a rare first edition, first issue copy.
Only 2 Beatrix Potter stories, this one and The story of Miss Moppet were published in this manner, as a wallet with foldout pages. It was rightly considered too fragile and delicate for children to handle, and quickly abandoned.
There were 2 printings of this story in this form, both in 1906. The first was labelled on the back- Frederick Warne and Co London and New York the second issue was labelled - Frederick Warne and Co New York and London. This is a first issue copy.
The outer case is designed as a wallet of green cloth covered boards, closed by a silvered tab. Inside, the pages are mounted on linen, and fold out concertina style to a continuous panorama - 28 pages in all, 14 of text and 14 illustrations.
The story was written and illustrated by Potter in 1906 as a 6th Birthday gift for Louie Warne, her publishers grand daughter. The book was then published later that year for the Christmas market.
This is a fine used example of this rare 1st Issue. It was clearly a well loved and treasured possession.
The pages are complete, in excellent condition, all clean and the colours are bright. There are no tears or creases, and no inscriptions, pen marks or scribble.

condition
Despite its fragile nature, this is a very good, and carefully handled copy. There is some fading to the front, and very slight frays to the spine and edges of the tab slot.
Inside, the paper along the spine has worn away from use.
