Description
We have for sale an attractive and rather hard to find Chelsea Derby Mug circa 1770 derived from the R.H. French Collection.
This attractive 18th century porcelain mug is of a small size consisting of a globular body extending to a wide cylindrical neck moulded with radial groves. The mug is equipped with a wide looped handle decorated in gilt with Acanthas leaves and a gilt terminal kick which extends from the cylindrical neck to the globular body. The body of the mug is decorated with a gilt dental edge rim over a band of Smiths blue over sprigs of flowers painted in the manner of Edward Withers on a white ground to the cylindrical neck over a shaped Smiths blue border edged with gilt scrolls over the globular body which in turn is decorated with sprays of flowers painted in the manner of Edward Withers on a white ground. The base of the mug is marked with the entwined gilt anchor and D mark and carries an R H French collection label. A similar mug is illustrated in “Derby Porcelain 1750-1798” by Gilbert Bradley, publishers - Thomas Heneage & Co. Ltd, page 143, Isbn 0-946708-25-8.
The mug is 3.75 inches (9.5cm) high and is in a very good to excellent condition, however, there is a little bit of wear to the gilt to the rim as shown in the images.
