Description
A particularly attractively decorated Doulton Lambeth stoneware mug 1880 with silver mount 1881. Incised stylised foliate design in tonal blues on a finely decorated ground with raised beading. Hallmarked silver mount to its rim. Impressed Doulton Lambeth mark, shape and pattern number (D1496, 580). Dated 1880. Heavily monogrammed base with an “S” which is highly probable that it is for Eliza Simmance (worked at Doulton as an artist 1873-1928) who used a characteristic large S for all of her monograms which varied during her time at Doulton. The incised stylised decoration also being very typical of her Designs.“We” likely to also be an artist’s monogram (unknown). “Heh” for Harriet E Hibberd (worked 1876-1884 – listed as senior assistant in 1882). “Op” for Ellen Palmer (worked 1879-c1910 – listed as junior assistant in 1882). Silver rim with hallmarks for Mappin & Webb (John Newton Mappin & George Webb), London 1881.
