Description
A skillfully executed Doulton Lambeth stoneware vase by Louise E Edwards dated 1878. The vase is of baluster-form with narrow elongated flared neck. The body is decorated with incised, stylised foliate and floral design over a delicately slip-decorated ground. Geometric foliate design around its neck. Impressed Doulton Lambeth mark used c1876 to 1880 and dated 1878. Unusual incised signature in script; "L E Edwards Lambeth School of Art" (for artist Louise E Edwards). Monogrammed Em (for Senior Assistant Emma Martin). Pattern number 567. The vase is 36 cm in height.
After attending the Lambeth School of Art, Louise E Edwards worked at Doulton from c1873 to 1890. She specialsed in finely incised foliate, floral and scrollwork designs - some suggesting a Persian influence. She sometimes combined pate-sur-pate (or slip) painting with incised and carved decoration. Emma Martin worked at Doulton from 1875 to 1890 as a Senior Assistant.
