Description
This is a fine early 18th Century Georgian Walnut Bureau Bookcase. Date 1720-30
Standout features:-
1) Pretty stepped and welled interior
2) Straight grain oak carcass & Fine figured walnut veneer.
3) Herringbone banded borders to the drawer fronts and door panels of the bookcase
4) Deep cushion moulded Cornice.
5) Good small size. The main body of the bureau is 36 inches wide, the impressive cornice is 40 inches wide.
6) Fine condition throughout.

The Bureau
2 long drawers and 2 short drawers. The drawers are faced in 'mirrored' figured veneers with herringbone borders and ovalo lipped edges.
Pine dovetailed linings. All in good working order.
The engraved brass handles and escutcheons are old replacements.
The writing compartment.
The fall is veneered on the inside with a writing surface of straight grain walnut veneer - all original and in very good order. It has a stepped arrangement of 8 drawers, with pigeon holes above, and a central cupboard surrounded by reeded columns.
To the front is a sliding panel providing access to document storage space in the well below
The bookcase.
The doors have raised fielded panels, beautifully veneered in walnut with 'herringbone' borders.
Inside, the sides of the case have grooves to allow alternative shelf positions. It has 2 plank shelves faced with oak.
The hinges of the right hand bookcase door are old replacements, with old repairs to the groundwood of the cabinet.
The 'H' hinges of the left hand door are original as are the retaining catches to the door.
The locks to the fall, the interior door and the bookcase all work and have keys. The later 2 locks are replacements.
Construction.
The veneers are in very good condition and laid down on a carcass of straight grain georgian oak throughout.
The backboards and draw linings are pine and original.
The bracket feet are original. Old block repairs.
The mouldings around the top and base of the Bureau are original, cross grained blocks laid in sections.
