This is an exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian glass and English sterling silver mounted communion wine jug; an addition to our wine and drink related silverware collection
This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver and glass wine jug has a circular, rounded bulbous form.
The cylindrical neck of this antique jug is fitted with an impressive platin hallmarked sterling silver mount ornamented with a scalloped border to the lower portion.
The mount retains the original hinged, hallmarked domed cover surmounted with an impressive three-dimensional cross patoncé shaped finial.
This antique Victorian claret jug is fitted with an impressive handle with scrolling trifurcating terminals, ornamented with embossed trefoil leaf shaped sockets.
The plain glass body of the jug is encompassed with a further mount to the lower portion of the handle, embellished with the engraved inscription 'Glory be to God on High'.
This central mount is further ornamented with engraved foliate decoration, in addition to a matte texture to the background.
The silver and glass body surmounts a hallmarked plain circular domed, spreading foot accented with gilding to the underside; the gilding indicates the high quality of the piece.
This exceptional jug was crafted by the London silversmiths Sidney Blunt & Frederick Dendy Wray of Blunt, Wray & Co.
Such large examples of ecclesiastical jugs/ewers are rare to the market.

This antique communion jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The engraved decoration is all very crisp. The glass body is in perfect condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the mount and underside of the base, in addition to part hallmarks to the cover are all very clear; the hallmarks are deeply struck due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
