He is celebrated for blending the best of tradition and innovation in his sumptuous lounge and wingback chairs, as well as his assortment of contemporary tables. Each piece is striking and thought-provoking, crafted with time-honoured techniques. Mid-century Italian interiors, were designed to be light-hearted and conducive to socializing, and were the perfect setting for Buffa's creations. However, unlike his contemporaries who were known for their distinctive trademarks, Buffa's work for Cassina and other companies, ranging from sculptural side tables and storage pieces made of walnut and oak to opulent sheepskin sofas, varied greatly, attracting interior decorators and socialites with particular tastes. He was the son of the acclaimed artist Giovanni Buffa and graduated from Politecnico di Milano in 1927. He gained experience working with architects and designers like Gio Ponti and Emilio Lancia. Ponti, an influential designer who produced a vast array of furniture and imaginative spaces, was so impressed with Buffa that he showcased his simple yet sophisticated rosewood dressing table in the inaugural issue of his magazine, Domus, in 1928. After establishing a firm with his frequent collaborator Antonio Cassi Ramelli, Buffa rose to prominence in the Italian mid-century modern furniture design scene, undertaking projects for villas and residences across the country. His designs were a fusion of Art Deco, Rationalism, Neoclassicism, and whimsical elements. He had a preference for high-quality materials and worked with local artisans known for their craftsmanship, such as Serafino Arrighi and Marelli & Colico. In 1940, he collaborated with Mario Quarti's furniture studio to decorate the royal palace of Albania's King Zog, and in 1951, Egypt's King Farouk commissioned him to redesign the interior of his yacht. Buffa's creations are highly prized by collectors, and some of his designs remain in production, especially those made in collaboration with Angelo Marelli. The Italian furniture firm Eredi Marelli, which bears his name, still manufactures a selection of pieces from Buffa's comprehensive archives.
