In our opinion this is an exceptional example of his work.
Subject seascape marine view of the historic Admirals Cup Yachting Boat Race Regatta in 1969, at the front Carina leads sailing on the high relative choppy seas, above with blue sky and scattered whit clouds above. A feature which is so adorable are the sail shapes on the racing yachts, as they look similar to giant balloons.
Artist biography Brian Mays a known British artist he was born grew up in Hull East Riding of Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom before Ww2 in 1938. Hull is a fishing port city which was the birthplace of many of Britain's great marine artists over the years like Henry Redmore. Brian carried on the Hull based marine artist traditions. He loved the sea & history of ships and boat races, he developed such a great wealth of knowledge of the high seas in all its varying weather conditions as he worked as a fisherman working sailing on sea trawlers travelling to distant fishing grounds just off Iceland also the White Sea, Bear Island & Greenland. After some years working as a fisherman Brian felt that he needed to move on & go into the next chapter of his life which was to join his family business. This gave him the spare time to develop his greatest passion which of course was marine painting. He died in the year 2005, he specialised in painting traditional yachts from the late Victorian era up to the mid 20th century. He was deeply passionate about the America's Cup yacht races also yachting's races from the golden age. His paintings are increasing in such popularity, they have also been exhibited & sold in auctions around the world like Sotherby’s & are proudly displayed in many private collections globally.
The Admiral's Cup was an international yachting regatta held in Cowes Isle of Wight, it was arranged by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. For many years it was known as the unofficial world championship of offshore racing. The Admiral's Cup regatta was started in 1957 and was normally a biennial event occurring in odd-numbered years) which was competed for between national teams of 3 racing yachts from every participating country. The regatta pulled the world's best yacht designers & fastest yachts along with elite skippers & crews. The Admiral's Cup was made up of four races, scoring points where given to boats based on placement in the Cross Channel race, Brittania Cup also the New York Yacht Club Challenge Cup. The last race was the lost important as it awarded triple points. Being the world's most prestigious ocean races. Fastnet, a 650 mile, four day race with a course that started off in Cowes, England then rounding Fastnet Rock which was off the south coast of Ireland and then ending in Plymouth, England.
In 1969, eleven countries fielded in the Admiral's Cup the teams chosen for the United States team was the 41 Red Rooster which had a lifting keel, it was designed also skippered by Dick Carter. Carina was designed by McCurdy & Rhodes & skippered by Dick Nye. Palawan III, a Sparkman & Stephens creation skippered by Ibm Ceo Tom Watson. The Australian team who were very strong as they had won Admiral's Cup previously in 1967, they looked like they where about to repeat victory in 1969. However Red Rooster had other plans, by winning the Fastnet in a fleet of 140 yachts & won the most points in the Admiral's Cup regatta, which helped the United States team to win the Admiral's Cup. This achievement was again repeated until 1997. This was Dick Carter's second victory in Fastnet, as he won it in 1965 with his first ever design, which was the revolutionary Rabbit.
