Description
This 18th Century Georgian antique mahogany card or games table is beautifully designed, and of the highest quality and craftsmanship.
It is constructed of heavy dense solid mahogany, and has a fold over, hinged top, and gate legged mechanism to the rear of the frame.
When open, the playing surface has a wonderfully curved and shaped design, with a baize playing area, and circular corner platforms to take cards and game tokens for each of the 4 players.
When closed, as a side table or console, the deeply sculptured profile of the top is repeated in the design of the apron and sides. And it stands on 4 beautifully crafted cabriole legs
Fine condition throughout. The knuckle jointed hinge to the rear oak frame is original, hand cut and in excellent working order. The brass hinges to the top are also original, undisturbed and sound. The two leaves of the top are perfectly flat with no warping or gaps when closed. It has a newly replaced fine baize cloth playing surface.
To the rear, behind the gate leg, there would originally have been a concealed drawer, fitted into the frame to store playing cards and game tokens. This sadly is missing. The small hole to the inside surface of the gate support was to accommodate the knob handle of the drawer when the gate mechanism was closed (See photo).
