Description
We have for sale the perfect slightly unusual gift for a Christening, a very attractive silver anointing spoon by Wakey and Wheeler c1910. Anointing spoons are associated with the anointing of a monarch during the monarch's coronation. The concept stems from the Old Testament and the crowning of King Solomon. The original English anointing spoon was probably first used during the coronation of the English King, Henry II in 1154. That anointing spoon is a part of the British Crown Jewels and has been used in every coronation since it's first use. Commemorative silver anointing spoons were made when a new monarch ascended the thrown. This spoon, being made in 1910 was manufactured to celebrate the ascent of George the V in 1910 in anticipation of his coronation in 1911. The spoon caries full English hallmarks for London 1910, along with the makers marks for Wakey and Wheeler. The spoon 6.5 inches (16.5cm)long, weighs 43.8g and is in an excellent antique condition other than some light surface wear shown in the magnified image of the hallmarks and some slight rubbing to the the left hand edge of the makers marks.
