Description
This is a beautifully decorated Sèvres porcelain coffee can and saucer (gobelet litron et soucoupe) enameled with exquisitely painted sprays of flowers by the Sevres decorator Nicquet (fl 1765-1792) and gilded by Baudouin (1) (fl 1750-1790).
Running a finger over the decoration, the texture of the enamel can be felt, so it is possible that it is overglaze, indicating decoration later than the year that the can and saucer were made. Given the dates found on examples of work by the decorator and gilder (pgs 39 and 115 of “Sèvres Porcelain Makers and Marks of the Eighteenth Century, Dauterman, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1986), decoration and gilding may be dated with a reasonable degree of confidence to before 1792. There are a few specks in the glaze that may indicate a second firing.
