Tall Mirrored Pair of Royal Doulton Secessionist Vases by Eliza Simmance c.1903
A stunningly gorgeous mirrored pair of Royal Doulton Art Nouveau vases in the Secessionist style by Eliza Simmance c1903. The vases are of elongated balustre form with everted rim. Highly stylised tubelined floral and foliate design around the body - mirrored on the opposing vase to form the pair. The design clearly influenced by the Secessionist style emerging from Vienna and a rare find in Doulton's designs. Impressed Royal Doulton Lambeth mark used 1902-1922. Signed with Eliza Simmance's monogram (E within an S) together with assistant's monograms: F for Catherine Francis, f for L Francis and Lb (unknown). The vases measure 39 cm in height and 13 cm maximum diameter.
Eliza Simmance, one of the earliest artist engaged, worked at Doulton Lambeth as an Artist and Designer between 1873 and 1928. She quickly became recognised as an original and versatile designer - winning many high awards at international exhibitions. Her work remains highly collectible. Both Catherine Francis and L Francis worked at Doulton as assistants between 1887 and 1904 - dating these vases to between 1902 and 1904. They also worked on Marqueterie and Faience wares.
