Artist biography Oliver Clare was born during the Victorian era in the year of 1853 & died in the 20th century during the year of 1927, his father was also a renowned still-life artist his fathers name George Clare. The Clare family of which the majority were great Victorian artists, well known for their exceptional still life floral paintings. Oliver Clare lived the majority of his life in the Midlands, Birmingham. We can be almost certain that he learnt his artistic trade from his highly talented father George Clare.
They both used a near identical technique of stripling along with subject matter which was still life, they used stripling which is a painting technique where areas of light and shadow are made using just dots, for darker areas you apply a larger number of dots and keep them bunched together. For lighter areas fewer dots are made and spaced further away. He was able to capture the bloom with his near invisible brush strokes and set the background capturing moss. Clare was known to have exhibited his paintings during his life. He is closely linked with the Artists of the West Midlands.
He exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists & Walker Art Gallery Liverpool. When he moved to London during the later Victorian era, that is when he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street. His works have sold at auction houses around the world, the highest current sold price is $21,312 Us dollars which was for a pair of paintings birds nest and flowers on a mossy bank that sold at Bonhams.
