Sir Edwin Henry Landseer Ra (7 March 1802 – 1 October 1873) was an English painter and sculptor, well known for his paintings of animals – particularly horses, dogs, and stags. His best-known works are the lion sculptures at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square. A Favourite Greyhound of Prince Albert is an 1841 oil on canvas painting by the British artist Edwin Landseer. It depicts Eos, a greyhound that Prince Albert brought with him to England when he married Queen Victoria. It is also known by the shorter title Eos.
Greyhound racing is an organized, competitive sport in which greyhounds are raced around an oval track. The sport originates from coursing. Track racing uses an artificial lure (usually a form of windsock) that travels ahead of the greyhounds on a rail until the greyhounds cross the finish line. As with horse racing, greyhound races often allow the public to bet on the outcome. Modern greyhound racing has its origins in coursing. The first recorded attempt at racing greyhounds on a straight track was made beside the Welsh Harp reservoir, Hendon, England, in 1876.
