Victorian Pearl Mourning Ring

This is a beautifully poignant early Victorian Mourning ring fashioned from buttery 15 carrot gold. The centre has a hard stone carved into a flower motive, probably to resemble a Forget-me-not which is surrounded by a pearl cluster (tears for the deceased). The shank is fashioned with agapanthus leaves (symbolising an everlasting eternal love). The rear of the ring contains a glass window which holds a braided lock of hair. The inside of the shank contains the following engraved inscription: Mary Dave 13th May 1839 age 81. I think we would all argee that Mary had indeed lived a long life right at the beginning of the Victorian era. Mourning rings were commissioned by the relatives of the deceased as a memorial to their loved one and worn in remembrance. This particular ring is exquisite and in amazing condition for its great age. Size: O
