Description
We present for consideration, this alluring fusee wall clock with 12” dial, by maker Samuel Hume of 17 Elvet Bridge, Durham.
Born 1836, into a clockmaking family in the village of Glanton, Nr Alnwick, Northumberland, Hume became apprentice (and later employee) to his clock and watchmaking father Robert Hume, in Glanton during the 1850’s. However, by 1861 (then 25 and married), Hume lived at Houghton Le Spring, Tyne and Wear, as a then qualified watch and clockmaker.
• Turned roundhead face and boxed cabinet are made of lovely solid golden Oak timber.
• Hinged inspection door located on the side of the box.
• Turn-catch hinged regulator door to the bottom of the box.
• Metal dial has black Roman numerals and Hume’s details.
• Original pair of blued spade hands, secured with a pinned collet.
• Thick glaze mounted in a brass bezel.
• Quality 8-day single fusee chain driven movement set between concentrically snailed rectangular plates with turned pillars.
• Comes with its original 73mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a brass winding key.
By c1868, Hume had again relocated and was now living and working at 17 Elvet Bridge, Durham (a premises that remains today), from where he spent the next 40+ years as a successful watch and clockmaker and jeweller, until his death on the 4 May 1909 at the age of 73 years old.
(Nb: He was probably still working in 1902, aged 64, given that his name appears in a local trade directory of the time).
An excellent wall clock from a well-respected and provincial North-East of England clockmaker. One who hailed from a strong clockmaking family dynasty and heritage.
