Samuel Hume of Durham - Clockmaker

Samuel Hume of Durham was born 1836, into a clockmaking family in the village of Glanton, Nr Alnwick, Northumberland, Hume became apprentice (and later employee) to his clock and watchmaking father Robert Hume, in Glanton during the 1850’s. However, by 1861 (then 25 and married), Hume lived at Houghton Le Spring, Tyne and Wear, as a then qualified watch and clockmaker.


By c1868, Hume had again relocated and was now living and working at 17 Elvet Bridge, Durham (a premises that remains today), from where he spent the next 40+ years as a successful watch and clockmaker and jeweller, until his death on the 4 May 1909 at the age of 73 years old.
