Samuel Hume of Durham was born 1836, into a clockmaking family in the village of Glanton, Nr Alnwick, Northumberland, Hume became apprentice (and
later employee) to his clock and watchmaking father Robert Hume, in Glanton during the 1850’s. However, by 1861 (then 25 and married), Hume lived at
Houghton Le Spring, Tyne and Wear, as a then qualified watch and clockmaker.
