Description
This magnificent antique George III sterling silver platter has an oval shaped form with a sunken plain oval central well.
The well of this silver meat platter is plain and unembellished.
The raised shaped border is ornamented with a crisp bright cut engraved crest depicting a stag’s head erased.
The rim of this impressive example of Georgian silverware is encompassed with a cast and applied gadroon decorated border.
This magnificent meat platter was crafted by the renowned silversmiths Robert Cattle & James Barber in York, England; such pieces of silver, bearing the York town mark, are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.

condition
condition
This antique York silver meat platter is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
The cast gadroon decoration is very sharp and the bright cut engraved crest is very crisp.
There are some surface knife scratches to the well of the platter, in keeping with the age and purpose; these marks can be softened by a silversmith if required.
Full York hallmarks struck to the underside of the rim of the platter are all very clear.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of Georgian silverware.
