Based in stunning Speyside, Moray, Scotland, we (Mr & Mrs W) are passionate about quality antique items with great design and evident craft, predominantly from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. In particular, we enjoy period items reflecting the beautiful design and aesthetic changes from the decorative arts, from circa 1850 - 1960. Including the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts Movement (In particular of Scottish origin), Modernism, Art Deco and Streamlining. We also enjoy the great craft and quality construction in folk art and vernacular items from across Europe. In particular, Scandinavian decorative items from the 18th and 19th Century. We enjoy being analytical in our approach and supporting our stock with background research, provenance and history through researching the items, the period, designers and retailers. We often hunt the country from our Scottish location, but routinely search from Lancashire and Yorkshire as well as buying trips further afield to supply items online. We also like to take on items that particularly interest us from earlier periods, dependent on our fascination for an object. We are always learning, and happy to share knowledge gained, so please do get in touch. Thanks for viewing our selection of stock, we are always pleased to see items pass through our hands to new owners and homes as antiques remain a great green recyclable purchase! Description
For sale is an attractive Arts & Crafts, Liberty style Anglo-Moorish / Arabesque lamp table circa 1902 - 1930. With London, New Bond Street history/origin. - This elegant antique lamp table is a great size and height and particularly decorative. - The rectangular top is supported by four out-swept legs, united by Arabesque arched panels and decorative shaped inner surfaces - The rectangular top has simple beveled decoration around the edge - The four legs are all angled / out-swept in the manner of the Arts & Crafts Movement design influence and are joined neatly in sections along both the long and short sides of the lamp table - The table looks to be of sectioned walnut joined in panels and the top is secured underneath by original screws holding the top in place - The attractive table is stable and solid with no issues, only age-related wear and marks but in good condition - On one of the long side panels of the table there is a brass domed plaque mounted and displaying the following shown in the final image: ~ Royal Coat of Arms above: ~ A. Cox & Sons ~ 120 New Bond St ~ London Our research indicates that Alfred Cox & Sons* were high quality 'Surgical and Veterinary Instrument Makers and moved from 108 New Bond Street to 120 New Bond Street, London in circa 1902* at the beginning of the Twentieth century. They were present at this address until circa 1930 when they moved again to Duke Street. It could be that this table was owned by them and their mark was then applied after purchasing the table with one of their company metal plaques as a recognized piece of their furniture. It is not thought that the table is attributable to them. Their office at 120 New Bond Street for example is within 0.3 of a mile of Liberty & Co on Great Marlborough Street. Ready for continued and stylish decorative utility. **The gothic revival candelabra and Aesthetic Movement transfer print jug are not included in this sale / listing and are for context / scale only. The branched candelabra is one of a pair available from W&W Antiques. Reference: * Weston-Davies, W.H. (1989) The surgical instrument maker: an historical perspective.
