Description
For sale is this bright and bold Scottish 'spongeware' table/potato bowl hand-painted circa 1880-1900. - Large Persian rose pattern*, stylised floral design hand-painted. - Pink / red and dark blue flowerheads with green leaves and dark stems, with double & triple pink/red framing lines to the inside of the bowl, lip/rim circumference and outside the waist of the bowl in triplicate. - No makers mark, attributed to East Scottish, Kirkcaldy pottery from David Methven & Sons Company or Links pottery.  The pattern has some similarities to 'Airlie Ware' D.M. & Sons pattern. - The bowl is in good condition with age-related wear to the bowl but in good solid shape. The Links or Kirkcaldy pottery tended to copy successful ranges (such as Wemyss ware) of other manufacturers and achieved very high output, much of which went for export to the Empire in the Victorian era from 1835-1935. Creamware was produced from the mid-nineteenth century, and was usually printed or painted.  The Links or The Kirkcaldy Pottery for most of its existence is associated with the Methven family of David Methven & Sons.  Ref: Kelly, H.E., Dorothy, A.A. & Kowalsky, D.E. (2001) Spongeware 1835-1935 Makers, marks & patterns. Schiffer.
