Description
This box looks and feels quality. Solid mahogany of very sound construction with the original ‘feature’ brass screws that are almost regarded as a trade mark for either medical or military boxes. The box is in superb condition. Original inlaid brass cartouche and escutcheon. Original side swing clasps. The lid closes perfectly square. Original hinges and lock with a replacement working key supplied. The base section features a removable stainless steel tray with 2 removable fittings. Both fittings have folding twin handles. One has 2 cross supports the other has 3 . The interior measurements of the tray are 2.5 cm deep x 19cm x 9.3cm. All interior supports can be removed and/or adapted to perhaps support a collection of instruments, pens, cut throat razors etc. Or perhaps remove both tray fittings and merely use the tray for a couple of prized wristwatches? Please see photographs. Whatever the use there can be no denying the quality of the box in terms of quality build and appearance. It is difficult to date the box….the style would perhaps suggest mid- late Victorian but the stainless steel tray would date later hence the estimate of 1900. One fine box.
