Description
A very rare Worcester porcelain butter boat painted in polychrome enamels with flowers in yellow, green and light blue over a red outline . Geranium moulded leaves for the outside with a shaped rim and short stalk forming the top of the handle. Unmarked, c.1755-1756.
Butter boats and pickle dishes are very rarely decorated in polychrome enamels because the acids in the food that would be placed inside would react with the enamel colours. They quickly became decorated solely in underglaze blue so these early enamelled examples are very rare and I haven't seen any examples in this combination of colours.
measurements
It measures 8.1cm (3 3/16") long, 6cm (2 5/16") wide and 3.5cm (1 3/8") high.
