Description
Delightful pair of carved oak corbels, the whole surface expertly carved with scrolls, the front in large swirls reminiscent of the waves rolling in from the sea rolling over and over at the waters edge. At the end an open sea shell shining with a guilt finish. Both side ends of the corbels are carved with further swirling shapes adding to the whole three dimensional look to the corbels. They are both interesting and uplifting the workmanship is great.
This wood corbel and its partner were originally forming part of the architectural structure of a department store front. The Kempthorne & Phillips store was in Richmond Upon Thames. The store was believed to have been taken over by Booker McConnell in 1969-1970 who later called their new store Campbell & Booker. When the new store was being refitted these corbels were removed to be thrown away. Luckily a gentleman by the name of John Jagged had the good fortune of rescuing them intending to later use them in his home but never got around to utilizing them.
The corbels look as if they could have been made in the late 1800's to early 1900's because of the styling, unfortunately we have not been able to confirm either way. Never the less, these time worn original architectural features are extremely hard to find.
Items to have fun with, mount them either side of a doorway or on a chimney breast. With careful mounting a mantel shelf could be added above to place favoured items on, from indoor plants or storm candle holders. I find these great fun and hope you do too.
