Based in stunning Speyside, Moray, Scotland, we (Mr & Mrs W) are passionate about quality antique items with great design and evident craft, predominantly from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. In particular, we enjoy period items reflecting the beautiful design and aesthetic changes from the decorative arts, from circa 1850 - 1960. Including the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts Movement (In particular of Scottish origin), Modernism, Art Deco and Streamlining. We also enjoy the great craft and quality construction in folk art and vernacular items from across Europe. In particular, Scandinavian decorative items from the 18th and 19th Century. We enjoy being analytical in our approach and supporting our stock with background research, provenance and history through researching the items, the period, designers and retailers. We often hunt the country from our Scottish location, but routinely search from Lancashire and Yorkshire as well as buying trips further afield to supply items online. We also like to take on items that particularly interest us from earlier periods, dependent on our fascination for an object. We are always learning, and happy to share knowledge gained, so please do get in touch. Thanks for viewing our selection of stock, we are always pleased to see items pass through our hands to new owners and homes as antiques remain a great green recyclable purchase! Description
For sale is a beautiful iron art metalwork medieval-revival design, German hand made jewelry box or trinket box. - The box is made of wrought iron and is decorated with studs and brass decoration with a brass cabochon on the lid and front edges. - The interior of the box is cedar lined with removable sections. - The box has a twist decorated handle retained with iron sections and studs, in the centre of the lid is an oval brass cabochon with pierced pattern. - The box is stamped to the base as shown in the photographs, Goberg and Ges Gesch (German Gesetzlich Geschützt = Legally protected) In 1895 Hugo Berger (GoBerg) started his first metal factory in Schmalkalden, Central Germany creating beautiful decorative iron art metalwork. This was manufactured in a traditional way in the manner of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Goberg materials used were typically in iron and brass in keeping with the hand wrought, simple and useable backdrop of the movement. In the early 20th Century, his reputation and profile became well known world-wide due to the fact that Liberty and Co. of London and associated retailers were stocking his designs and work. In the Netherlands for instance, Goberg objects were sold at Metz & Co. Metalwork items including candlesticks, candelabra, smoking accessories, boxes and other decorative items produced in robust materials and with great construction. Pressed steel and interchangeable parts were used in different combinations to create new designs which were finished by hand. In the United Kingdom, Liberty & Company imported Goberg Metallwarenfrabrik products from about 1905 to 1920. In The Studio Year-Book of Decorative Art (1909), there is this note: "Berger, Hugo, Schmalkalden, Thuringia. Herr Berger designs and executes metal-work, mostly in hammered wrought-iron, brass and copper. Some of his designs display considerable originality, and the workmanship is always good." This very elegant medieval revivalist jewelry box with brass highlights including rope-work swags to the front corners is a lovely item at circa 110 years of age. **The last two images show a second Goberg jewellery box W&W Antiques have available for sale, this is not included with this sale item, but if you are interested in both items please contact us.
