A very desirable and decorative tub-shaped Arts and Crafts armchair by the famous top cabinetmaker/wholesale manufacturer J. S. Henry of London (signed under seat), who specialised in "Art Furniture" until 1910. The solid mahogany armchair, which dates to circa 1890/1900, is after a design attributed to leading designer George Montague Ellwood. The elongated back rest comprises a shaped padded head panel above a central panelled splat inlaid with stylised seed pods in fruitwood. The arms, which are supported by simple square tapering supports, progress to unite to the respective fore legs. The serpentine fronted seat is raised on square legs all ending in brass castors. The tapering fore legs are joined by square stretchers that narrow inward towards the splayed back legs. The armchair is traditionally re-upholstered by The Sitting Place. The theme of the inlay decoration has been continued in the fabric that was chosen for this chair, which is the Fruit Velvet fabric (indigo/slate) by Morris & Co, and includes pomegranates. This decorative armchair would make a stunning focal point. Table and accessories are for display purposes only.
