Description
Probably one of the nicest Arts & Crafts pottery candlesticks I have come across. Only one available!
Manufactured by Wardle & Co in Stoke-on-Trent from around 1871 onwards, it has a classic and striking design with the prettiest of colours. Stamped with the name and serial numn]ber to the base. A fine example of Arts & Crafts pottery from than era.
James Wardle followed his father's (William) into the pottery business around 1854 and the company was renamed Wardle & Co in 1871 after he dies and his wife took over the business. Wardle went on to flourish for many years and spanned a period between 1871 to 1935 when it finally ceased trading.
The Arts and Crafts design movement, which flourished from the late 19th to early 20th century, was characterized by a return to handcraftsmanship and a reaction against industrialization. The movement emphasized the beauty of craftsmanship, the use of natural materials, and the integration of art into everyday life. Here are some of the main influencers of the Arts and Crafts movement.
Some of the most prominent movers & shakers of the time will include; William Morris (1834-1896), John Ruskin (1819-1900), Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) to name a few.
