Description
We are still amazed at the effort and passion for painting furniture especially coffers and chests furniture in the 17th, 18th & 19th Century. Take this example of a folk art painted coffer; Probably just thought as a utilitarian piece of furniture. However, it was often one of a very few piece in the home and used to protect and keep safe your only possessions.
Mostly constructed in pine, then lavishly decorated with flora and fauna to highlights its importance in the room. This coffer has hand forged handles on each side, a lock inside (no key), escutcheon to the front and a cornice style trim to the base edge.
This beautifully decorated coffer has an elaborate floral painted design across the front and lid, with a more simple design to the sides. Probably a passion for gardening, hence the bouquets of flowers adorning the panels.
Folk art painting on furniture in Europe has deep roots, reflecting the cultural and social history of various regions. This art form, often created by amateur or self-taught artists, was traditionally used to decorate functional household items like chests, chairs, tables, and cabinets. The history and origins of this practice vary across Europe, influenced by local customs, materials, and artistic traditions.
