Description
This is a heavily worn and characterful painted hall bench with a lovely gothic styling to the canted fretwork cut back rest from the late 19th century.
Initially what drew me to this lovely antique old worn hall bench is the pitched 'Gothic' arch with the open fretwork detailing. This back rest panel is angled at the right position for all to enjoy comfortably. It appears to rest naturally against a cross support without any fixings at first glance but is firmly fixed in place to a bar. Supported at either end by two weathered, gnarly vertical posts.
The whole piece has the remnants of a creamy white paint finish with subtle undertones of a pinkish colour, this could be from the old pine bleeding through the colour, this is open to interpretation, I'm sure. This aside, the colour is extremely warm & pleasant to the eye. Extensive colour wear to top arch where previous owners rested hands as it is very tactile.
The legs have a substantial solid look and indeed they are. They have the most wonderful wear to the legs and on closer inspection the front crossbar, where it is clear it has been used to rest the heels of many a shoe or two over its lifetime. You cannot recreate this without some history and a lot of family use.
Checkout the seat as this is worn to perfection and highlights the polishing that occurred naturally from everyday use.
If I was greeted by this in my hall on a daily basis, it would constantly make me smile... Everything you could possibly want in this one!
