Late Victorian (1870/1880s) upholstered armchair with open arms and in mahogany. The padded arms of the armchair are raised on turned supports, while the seat stands on turned forelegs and outswept back legs all ending in brass castors.
The inner seat retains the paper label inscribed with the firm's name "Marsh, Jones & Cribb (Late Kendell & Co)" with job number and workman's signed name. Marsh, Jones and Cribb were very famous Victorian cabinet makers and upholsterers of Leeds, Yorkshire. They worked from 10 West Bar (from 1864 initially as Marsh & Jones, acquired from John Kendall), and then also from premises in 48 Boar Lane (from 1869) and in 91 Basinghall Street (from 1870). They were of both national and international repute having exhibited at Yorkshire and Paris exhibitions in 1875 and 1878, respectively, and worked with famous designers such as Charles Bevan and Bruce Talbert.
The armchair is fully traditionally re-upholstered by The Sitting Place. The armchair is then covered in Squirrel & Sunflower indigo fabric by St Jude's and designed by Mark Hearld. The armchair is of a neat size making it ideal for a bedroom setting or in a reading nook, where space is limited. Table and accessories are for display purposes only. Photos of the upholstery process are found on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
