Description
These Tazza glasses are simply an exquisite type of stemware. They are celebrated for their historical design, significance and stunning workmanship, particularly when crafted in a Venetian style. Venetian glassmaking, with roots deeply embedded in the artistic and cultural heritage of Venice, Italy, elevates these glasses to unparalleled heights of beauty and craftsmanship. Although showing all the hallmarks of Venetian artisanal glass making skills, there is no way of pinpointing their provenance, mainly because most glass is not signed.
However, if like me, you love the form and design qualities this set of three Tazza stemmed glasses represents, you will love them for what they are.
Each piece is hand blown and assembled in three sections when made. Now look at the detail...The base has a caramel swirl as part of the base. The caramel colours run up through the twisted stem with three curled supports for the cups to sit on, and you can see where the glass was cut during the creation. There are no pontil marks as we believe, they were made in sections and stuck together so the pontils are hidden (only our observation).
More wonderful detail can be seen in the fish like air bubbles left in the glass blowing process. When you look at the cups they have been meticulously created in layers to produce the veining and amazing marble effect finish.
Originally made to display fruit, sweets and to be drunk from, maybe sipping fine wine or champagne.
Historical Significance...
Venetian glassmaking dates back to the 13th century and has since become synonymous with quality, innovation, and artistry. The Tazza glass, characterised by its shallow bowl and wide rim atop a delicate stem, gained prominence during the Renaissance. These glasses were often used for serving wine or desserts, symbolising the wealth and sophistication of the time.
There is no damage, cracks or chips, but you may, when looking very closely, see very minimal wear. There are tell tale signs of glass blowing throughout the process and visible signs of where the glass was cut during the process.
